Once upon a time, a little girl was born in the belly button of Britain, in Birmingham. But she had a problem. Whenever she opened her mouth, words did not come out normally and people couldn't understand her. And that little girl, that was me.

My name's Katrice. I had a problem with talking, and I became very scared to talk, even though I had gone to speech therapy lessons.

One of my main ways of dealing with that was to disappear into the land of story. I would imagine I was a princess locked in a tower, I would imagine that somebody was going to rescue me, and I would imagine a happy ever after for myself.

I really believe that helped me survive a time that was very painful.

So, perhaps that makes me a better storyteller. Something that could have been very negative has actually become something that I think is quite positive.
