Trygve Magnus Haavelmo was born on December 13, 1911, in Skedsmo, Norway. After completing his education at the Oslo Cathedral School, Haavelmo earned a degree in economics from the University of Oslo in 1930.
He then secured a position at the Institute of Economics, recommended by Ragnar Frisch, who is credited with the establishment of econometrics as a discipline. Haavelmo worked as Frisch's assistant for some time.
