Musicien versatile, superbe guitariste à l'aise dans le Blues mais aussi dans de nombreux autres genres (Gospel, Doo-Wop, Pop, Rhythm & Blues), il commence au début des années 40 par chanter dans des formations Gospel.

Avec Thurman Ruth, il forme The Jubilators en 1949 puis The Larks. Ce disque reprend ses quatres premiers morceaux en leader pour le label Gotham. Ils démontrent clairement sa dextérité à la guitare en particulier "Somebody change the lock" et "You're a little too slow".
