In 1750, Gottlieb Mittelberger traveled from Germany to Pennsylvania, on board a ship filled with other Germans too poor to pay for their for their own passage. Instead, they planned to make an arrangement once they arrived in Pennsylvania for someone their to pay what they owed; in exchange they would sign a contract (indentures), agreeing to work for an agreed-upon term of service. When the ships have for the last time weighed their anchors near the city of Kaupp [Cowes] in Old England, the real misery begins with the long voyage. For from there the ships, unless they have good wind, must often sail S, 9, 10 to 12 weeks before they reach Philadelphia.
